Orion Research Foundation Grants for the year 2026

Grants for the year 2026 can be applied for between August 1st and September 10th, 2025.

Grants are designated to support academic research for Finnish medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and natural sciences related to those, such as chemistry and physics according to Orion Research Foundation’s rules

  1. for researchers with a doctorate (completed with thesis defense after 10th September 2020*)), for continuation of research (maximum EUR 50,000) and
  2. for young scientists without a doctorate, for scientific research (EUR 6,000).

Grants are designated to use as a personal grant or to cover other research expenditure.

Research abroad or establishing own research group with the greater grant is appreciated. Applicant shall attach the engagement letter from place of performance abroad for research of post doctorate grant.



Grants are applied for using an electronic form. The application form is to be filled in using Finnish, Swedish or English. The Foundation does not take additional attachments or recommendation letters into account. An applicant may receive greater grant of maximum EUR 50,000 once and smaller 6,000 grant a maximum of two times.

The Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution (Mela) handles the statutory earnings-related pension and occupational accident insurance of those receiving a grant or scholarship from Finland. The grant application period is between 1 August and 10 September 2025. It is not possible to make changes to applications after they have been submitted. November 2025 all applicants will have an email to the address entered in the application. The decisions on grants will be published towards the end of 2025 on the Research Foundation’s website. The grants will be paid out in January 2026.

*) By completing the degree of specialist, specialized dentist or specialized veterinarian or for other special reasons (such as maternity, paternity, parental or nursing leave, conscript or non-military service or long-term sickness) applicant has completed with thesis defense after 10th September 2018. In this case applicant shall give clarification in CV.
